Ask why you are being stopped.

Ask the officer for their badge or service number. They are required to provide it. If the officer refuses, ask to speak to the supervising officer.

During an identity check, you only have to provide your name, address, and date of birth. The police will often want to know more, but you are NOT obliged to provide any additional information about yourself. Exercise your right to remain silent.

If you are under 18 years old, you must also provide the name of your legal guardian.

You are not required to carry identification. However, it is advisable to have an ID with you, otherwise your identity may have to be verified at the police station.

Police Interview

Stay calm and composed during the interview.

Always exercise your right to remain silent. Anything you say may be used against you and others.

Police officers are trained and may try to pressure you with statements such as: "We already know from witness statements that you were involved in the offense." Their goal is to unsettle you and persuade you to make an incriminating statement.

You have the right to make two successful phone calls. Contact your lawyer and a trusted person.

If you cannot reach anyone, call the Lawyers' Emergency Service, which is free of charge and available 24 hours a day.
